Historia de un letrero
August 12th, 2008This is an interesting short film. It won in the short story category at the Cannes Festival, 2008. The title says “History of a Signboard” (transliterating).
The story is very clever and has a great punchline (I won’t tell you the story since it’s so short and I don’t want to give anything away). I love their music too.
Goofin’ Off
July 26th, 2008Hi… I’m posting this from an iPhone =). (No, not mine unfortunately… me is poor *sniff*. Someone is just letting me borrow theirs for a bit.)
It’s pretty cool; still getting the hang of this keyboard, but it’s pretty easy to type fairly fast (even with bringing up the symbols panel and everything). It’s got very good predictive typing abilities, but it’s keyboard does need to be just a squeak bigger to make everything a bit more accurate (though I must say I’m pleased with how messy you can type and still get the letter you want. Definitely not something I want to be typing a 2,000 word paper on, but that’s not what it’s for, is it? =P
Now that I’ve tried one of these I want one even more (which is a good sign… means it didn’t disappoint me =P ).
One feature I’m wanting, that I haven’t found yet, is the ability to select text by dragging with your finger (or something that gives the same result) like you can with your mouse; anyone know how to do that on an iPhone?
(Hmmm… Just in the amount of time it’s taken me to write this blog entry I’ve gotten pretty fast at this keyboard, I might have to strike my previous comment about the keyboard needing to be bigger.)
New Design
July 25th, 2008The new Infoshrew design has now gone live!
I still kinda like the old design, but the new design style fits my conception of what my site is a little better. At this stage the blog is pretty much the only thing on my website worth looking at, I still have not migrated all of the content over from my old site, so it’s a little bare; no promises for when it’ll be updated, but I’ll keep trying to stick it in in my spare time.
Let me know what you think of the new look and feel =)
Crazy Environmentalists!
June 29th, 2008This is an interesting article debunking the myth of global warming. It’s written by John Coleman, founder of The Weather Channel.
He makes several very good points and explains why “global warming” has become politically supported these days, even though it’s been completely disproven scientifically. The article isn’t exhaustive on the topic, by any means, but quite interesting and well worth reading:
Firefox 3 Released
June 18th, 2008Mozilla has released Firefox 3, which has a lot of awesome new features and tons of bug fixes. Download it, use it, love it.
Read about the new features in Firefox 3
Mozilla is attempting to set a Guinness World Record for the most software downloaded in 24 hours, you can see a map of their progress so far at the spreadfirefox.com world record map page (you can even get a certificate with your name on it for participating, if that kind of thing interests you).
America is in the lead with well over 2 million downloads, Germany comes in second with almost half a million (huzzah for Germany!!!). Altogether there is a total of over 7 million downloads across the entire globe, but it’s not over yet…… hurry on over and add another download to the count!
Downloads began yesterday, but so many people were trying to download that the Mozilla servers just couldn’t handle it and they were down for a good while; fortunately they’re back up now and cranking the downloads through at almost 9,000 downloads a minute.
The Mozilla Blog has a message from Paul Kim, Mozilla’s VP of marketing, concerning the slowdown:
Our systems were quite busy earlier this morning so individual requests may not have gotten through - but they are all up now and serving a tremendous amount of traffic and downloads. We are currently serving almost 9,000 downloads a minute, which puts us on track to achieve 5-7 million downloads our first day of general availability.
Pistol Camera
June 18th, 2008Awesome Tornado Picture
June 18th, 2008What a picture.
When the weather turned violent and stormy on Tuesday evening, Lori Mehmen, who lives in the small farming town of Orchard in northeastern Iowa, looked out her front door and saw a funnel cloud bearing down — and evidently had the presence of mind to grab her digital camera and capture this shot before taking cover. The local paper, The Mitchell County Press-News, posted the photo on Wednesday and The Associated Press picked it up today.
The Press-News report says no one was injured by this tornado, which was one of scores reported in Iowa and across the Midwest this week, where storms and heavy rains have also produced widespread flooding.
Ms. Mehmen told the paper that her funnel cloud came close to the ground only briefly, then retreated back up into the clouds. Still, the high winds from the storm knocked down trees, damaged crops, and left behind one indelible image.
